This can happen if the unit has not been in use for awhile or has been exposed to dry or cold elements. Please grab some WD40 (or similar tool oil) and apply it generously to the steel rod. Then, push the rod in a few times to spread the oil out to the internals. This will not damage the tool - just use common sense on how much you use and see what works. This will definitely help!
Make sure to do this all while the tool is not connected to the tire valve stem.
